Not long ago I was reading a review of a book where the author was quoted as saying “Most people would rather be ‘right’ than be ‘happy’". Regretfully I am unable to find the source of this statement and that makes me sad.
I always like to credit those tellers of truth when they share wonderful insights such as these that imprint themselves into my very being.
And surprisingly, I although I never gave it much thought before, I started to notice that truth taking place all around me. We work so hard to hang onto limitations and be identified by them. We will wrap them around us like a blanket and hold them up at times as though we had acquired the red badge of courage.
But it’s easier that way, because then we don’t have to change our thinking.
My radio guest this week is Evan Slawson, co-creator of the AIM program and co-author of “Sanctuary” that relates much of the story of how AIM came about. Admittedly, I had to change a little of my thinking, even as I was reading the book. Although a believer and a practioner of energetic medicine, as well as an emerging fan of homeopathy, I was trying to figure out how this all worked.
I could get on board with the general concept of frequency based medicine. And I suppose that is just the musician in my who knows how I am affected by frequencies of sound.
But the idea of supplying a photograph, that essentially serves as the hologram for your overall state of health (or lack thereof), then adjusting any irregularities by balancing those frequencies with a computer program and reverse terminal and congenital conditions?
I didn’t see that this could be done.
But my picture remains “on the trays” being adjusted as needed, and even through my skepticism, I have had undeniable return to long gone energy levels with a renewed outlook and elevated peace. It could be that I was wrong….but that’s ok, I don’t need to be right.
I’ll take the “happy” instead.
It seemed slightly ironic that I encountered a book with a leading title of: “Quantum Prayer: It’s Already Answered", as I was visiting with the owner of a metaphysical book store to schedule my own book signing.
It so happened my mind had drifted momentarily to the need to fill my radio roster for the month of July, at exactly the same time my attention was being called to a book that was part of the the display for the next book signing that month. The display featured the book–and a bio–featuring Cathy Combs, author of “Quantum Prayer: It’s already answered, Quantum Reality: It already exists". Subsequent contact led to her being booked on my program on July 20th.
As I was reading Cathy’s book, I was gaining an understanding that so many times when we are questioning, feeling separated from Divine Intelligence and a bit adrift, that we are not necessarily “without” as much as we may not be able to see what lay “within": our inherent worth, goodness and all that lay around us that points to us being cared for–perhaps in ways we would not think to request specifically–that always align us with what we really need.
As I have been writing (and thinking–which is where the writing comes from) a good deal about being in the present moment, this fits. We think we have to pray and ‘remember’ to ask for what we need. Not just in the material things, but for things like personal growth, patience, understanding, help out of our troubles….
There is an old saying that states: if “Thank You” were the only prayer offered in the course of a day, this would be sufficient. I have always liked this and now it resonates with me for a number of reasons.
In a traditional sense, this speaks to the element of faith. You are acknowledging that you are worthy of the good in your life and that although things look dark now, the “how” of the improvement is inconsequential. You are just trusting it to happen.
In a new age or “quantum” sense: it’s speaks beautifully to the awareness aspect. Even if the awareness is for a desired radio guest: It’s already has already been found….just as I was becoming aware that I was even looking.
Namaste.
This week my guest is Doug Foresta, host of BlogTalkRadio’s “Break Free to Success". In another one of those two parter’s that I love so well, Doug joins me on my show June 13 and I exchange guest seats with him on June 15 to become his guest as we talk about releasing limited beliefs.
Now there are a lot of coaches and teachers working with this same theme, but Doug’s credentials come not in his background as a counselor but as a bona fide artist. (He is also a playwright) He knows what creative types have to battle with, because..well he IS one and therin lie our common ground.
In a society that demands so much of its artist-icons, elevating them to royalty and making every element of their lives the subject of tabloids and speculation, it is understandable that a mere mortal who just wants to create and make a living doing that would feel a little challenged at times.
Then at the same time there exists this consensus reality that “nobody really gets paid for doing that” and if they do, then they must have done something really suspect and unrelated to their art.
You see, I once had that same myopic view of my own career, and that visual impairment almost made it non existant for me. Thank goodness I had a wonderful mentor and coach who could remove the blinders and broaden my view.
The truth is there are no cirucmstances, lack of resources, shortage of opportunities or general barrier that will ever have the power to hold us back as much as our own limited thinking.
And once we understand that (and have expanded beyond those limits) we don’t just break free to success….
We easily step into it.
Time–along with space and material (meaning money)–is a resource that is often seen as very limited. Expressions like “there just aren’t enough hours in the day” or some version thereof, surface to remind us that time “spent” cannot be recovered. So many times then, like money, we become resentful when it feels like it was taken away from us or forced from our precious grasp. Sometimes we get so preoccupied with “spending it wisely” that we don’t ’spend’ it at all.
Time has become the great crucible of the 21st century. But it doesnt have to be. The greatest answer is in realizing that time, money and material are all interchangeable. Something I learned while playing chess a number of years ago (Yes, I am a girl geek), and was reminded of just today….
I arrived at my favorite resale shop to pick up a couple of items for my summer wardrobe. As I stood in line I was greeted, grabbed and hugged by a long time friend who was standing behind me in line.
Peg is one of those people who you know will be in your life forever, but you’re just going in opposite directions and time doesn’t seem to allow you to be together as often as you like.
As someone who witnessed my earliest performance in the church we belonged to more than 2 decades ago, she would show up at a few of the publicized events and let me know that I was still a part of her life as well. I always felt like the little sister looking up at her: together and balanced, witty and wise, she always made time for people and their star moments–and I often wondered how she did it. I tried many times to model after her, but often felt like I missed the mark.
Now she had showed up in the same space as me and it seemed almost predestined as she extended an invitation to an impromptu lunch.
As I had a laundry list of chores set for the day that I felt necessary to establish my worth and generate income, I paused…but did not decline for the rare privledge of taking a moment to answer the kindness of a friend. It was in fact rare that we occupied the same space at that moment. We agreed to go to a nearby chinese restaurant where (bless her heart) she picked up the tab.
During our conversation she let me know about a retreat that would very likely host a performance and workshop I was preparing–taking care of one of the big things on my list.
I received other info about a gathering later in the week where I might be able to market my music and several other tidbits that I could put to good use. And then I realized….
How many times do we fight the inclination to make time for people in order to “be good” and do what we think we are supposed to do?
(Another “aha” I received from this encounter).
Yet, time spent with my friend afforded me the joy of her company, leftovers from my lunch that takes care of time consuming supper prep, several good leads and an awareness that I didn’t have before:
That I had finally learned from my friend Peg, how to make time for the important people in my life: Just say “Yes".
The rewards will be greater than you could ever have imagined.
This week I am twice-blessed to have a conversation with someone who touches so strongly on what many people–especially artists–are feeling: “Why won’t someone pay me what I’m worth?".
Soul Dancer (yes, that is his real name) hosts an online radio program called “Pay me what I’m worth", additionally having published a book by the same name his goal is to help people understand how they can get compensated for their gifts and abilities.
On Monday 6/28 I get to be a guest on his program as part I of our series, then on Tuesday 6/29 he joins me on my program to continue the conversation (Part II).
Anyone who has played the part of a struggling musician, artist, author or even gone to work in an office feeling enormously underpaid can absolultely relate to this.
We know it has nothing to do with societal contributions (otherwise fire fighters & nurses would have salaries matching or exceeding those of sports figures)
What we are actually worth to someone may is often measured by a different currency than we hold. Kind of like trading in yen with euros.
Knowing how to relate our worth using the same vocal “currency” that the other person considers to be of value, is the first step.
But I don’t want to give it all away, so I’ll just incude the links for both programs. Part I on Monday night can be accessed anytime by using the following link: http://bit.ly/20100628larkin (you’ll just get the archive and not the live programming, and Part II can be accessed with this link: http://tobtr.com/s/1117426 (same deal).
I hope you join us.
